    ### 🔍 Probable Causes - CPU Frequency Scaling on Battery Ubuntu (and many Linux distros) often throttle CPU performance when unplugged to conserve power. This can cause noticeable slowdowns if not properly configured. - Power Profile Misconfiguration The system might be defaulting to an aggressive power-saving mode (like power-saver) that limits performance drastically. - GPU Driver Behavior If you're using a hybrid graphics setup (e.g., Intel + NVIDIA), the switch to battery might trigger a fallback or inefficient GPU mode. - TLP or PowerTOP Conflicts These power management tools can sometimes apply overly aggressive settings when switching to battery, especially if not tuned. - ACPI or BIOS/UEFI Quirks Some laptops have firmware-level power management that doesn’t play nicely with Linux, causing erratic behavior when unplugged. --- ### 🛠 How to Fix It Here’s a step-by-step approach to diagnose and resolve the issue: #### 1. Check CPU Scaling Behavior Run this command on battery: cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor If it returns powersave, try switching to performance: sudo apt install cpufrequtils sudo cpufreq-set -g performance #### 2. Install and Configure TLP TLP is a powerful tool for managing power, but it needs tuning: sudo apt install tlp tlp-rdw sudo systemctl enable tlp sudo systemctl start tlp Then edit /etc/tlp.conf and adjust settings like CPU_SCALING_GOVERNOR_ON_BAT=performance. #### 3. Use PowerTOP to Analyze Power Usage sudo apt install powertop sudo powertop Navigate to the Tunables tab and ensure everything is set to “Good”. #### 4. Check GNOME Power Profiles Ubuntu 22.04 uses power-profiles-daemon. You can check the current profile: powerprofilesctl Switch to balanced or performance: powerprofilesctl set balanced #### 5. Update BIOS/UEFI Check your laptop manufacturer’s site for firmware updates. Some power-related bugs are resolved at the firmware level. #### 6. Test with Live USB Boot from a live Ubuntu USB and see if the issue persists when unplugging. If not, it may be a config issue in your current install.
