Crimea doesn't need to belong to Ukraine, but it certainly shouldn't belong to Putin. That being said, if a territory is a, majority Russian, B, wants to depart, and C, is not really in the way of major bits of key infrastructure (rivers, harbors, sea access, national waters). Letting it go is a win. Same on the other side of the border. That being said, Putin or no Putin, letting Russia have decent access to the seas is sustainable. As long as they lack it, they are going to have an ich for invasion.
