Hello,
My name is Jaehyun Jeong, and I recorded an AsR in the FMC event at Silent Korea Open 2026.
To state the conclusion first, I attempted to cheat during the second and third attempts of Round 1.
For my second attempt, after finding a 22-move solution, I used my phone to search for the optimal solution to that scramble. The optimal solution used a 5-move EO that was based on the same idea as the 4-move EO I had found in my own 22-move solution, so I incorporated that solution into my solve. This was entirely my fault.
The third attempt was similar. Because the EO was straightforward, I quickly found both a 21-move solution and a 20-move solution. However, I knew that achieving a solution of 19 moves or fewer would result in a World Record average, and I became greedy and searched for the optimal solution again. As a result, I found an 18-move solution. However, I believed it was a solution that a human could not realistically have found, so I ultimately submitted the 20-move solution that I had found myself. Although the submitted result itself was not affected, it remains true that I attempted to cheat.
The circumstances that led to this were, ironically, a pair of new pants that I wore to the competition that day. It was the first time I had worn them, and I noticed that the pockets were rather loose while I was sitting down. (In fact, I even have messenger conversations from that day mentioning that I nearly lost my earbud case because it slipped out of my pocket while I was asleep on the train.) While I was deeply focused on FMC, my phone, which was in my pocket, started slipping out. I felt that suddenly taking out my phone and placing it on the table, or opening my bag to put it away, would appear inappropriate, so I simply placed it underneath my thigh to keep it from falling. That was how this incident began.
Having participated in WCA competitions for the past ten years, and having served as an organizer in South Korea for the four years(2020-2023), I fully understand how serious cheating is in WCA competitions. What I did was unquestionably wrong. Even after making that mistake, I should have immediately confessed and corrected the situation, but I failed to do so. That was another serious mistake on my part.
I am deeply ashamed of my actions and sincerely regret them. I would like to offer my heartfelt apology to the WCA and to the entire cubing community.
