Using preliminary information, Nepal’s Foreign Minister reported that an initial earthquake (quake at 8:37am local time) triggered an avalanche, and the avalanche then triggered a flash flood. Viewer discretion is advised for slide 3. The mudslide initially hit Gyirong Port on the China-Nepal border in Tibet’s Xizang region. Per Nepal’s tourism board, 291 foreign tourists and 93 Nepali nationals are reported missing. 18 are confirmed deceased on the Nepal side. China has not reported casualties, but President Xi has ordered an all out rescue operation by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) for the affected areas.
