Taiwan's otaku culture developed almost simultaneously with Japan's.😆 During the millennium, Taiwan's internet slang was mainly composed of local Taiwanese words and Japanese words (also thanks to Japanese dramas and idol groups). However, this character “囧” is a local meme. In the days before emojis existed, this text was used as an emoticon in MSN, online games, and online articles. It's an ancient, unused character that represents a window (look at its shape, haha), but we use it to express feelings of helplessness, embarrassment, and pain.
