"`The One I Once Knew' got its birth long ago, when I was still working on Alan Wake 2. For a short while I even thought it could fit in with that - but the overall consensus was it had a bit too great an emotional impact, and we decided to leave it resting," Alanko told NME. "At some point the lyrics were honed into their current form, and when Amelia Jones sang her beautiful vocals on it, something clicked. It's a track about searching for something or someone that feels almost like a lost half of you, not knowing where to find it, but your heart will show the way," he continued. "It bears a very significant meaning to me. It was a long time in the making, but I feel it is now where it should be. Another dear thing about it is it gave a lot of material for other tracks [on the soundtrack] as well."
