Telegram username history

A Telegram username can be released and taken again. The account changes while the t.me address stays the same — so anyone following an old link ends up at someone else. ChatCrawler shows who held the name before.

Why this is considered impossible

Telegram does not expose username history through its API: there is no standard way to learn who owned a name yesterday. Bots that «watch username changes» only see changes that happened while they were present, in the chats they sat in — they have no retrospect by construction.

How we do it

We do not ask Telegram — we look into our own index. Every public post carries its author's identifier and the username they had at the time of writing. Over 14.6B indexed posts are the history: when a name belonged to different identifiers at different times, we see it and show the period of ownership.

An honest limit

History is assembled only from PUBLIC posts the crawler managed to index. If a person never posted publicly, there is no history. If they posted in a venue we have not reached yet, it will appear later. We are not omniscient and do not pretend to be.

How to look

Open a venue or author card: the «@username history» block shows who held it before, exactly when, and where the owner moved if they changed the name. Nothing to type — the data is already in the index.
