They are essentially trying to find meaning in a society where they're largely cared for materially. In America, Cleetus the 80 IQ man with a secondary school education can, if he works hard, go and become a widget-maker at the Deathcorp factory down the road, making widgets that go im bombs that Europeans pay to be dropped in the middle east. With this widget-making job, Cleetus can raise a family with 3 kids, a house, car, dog etc.
In stark contrast to Britain and much of Europe, where our problems are explicitly material in nature (nobody can afford the roof over their heads and energy is a luxury) the American therefore must find himself something to keep him entertained, or some substitute conflict in which to vicariously engage. The Lego theft thing is the same as the "Real houswewives of wherever" - it keeps materially provided-for well-fed Americans entertained. Same as wars in the middle east and europe, it's their entertainment as they slurp a big gulp and walk round a giant air-conditioned wal mart.
