🚨🇵🇸🇮🇱 THROWBACK: when Israel adopted Nazi-style methods against Palestinians
As the first truce of the 1948 Arab–Israeli War ended in July 1948, Israeli forces launched Operation Dani, targeting the cities of Lydda and Ramla, designated for the Arab state under the UN Partition Plan.
The Israelis promised the residents of Lydda safety if they gathered in mosques and churches. They believed them. However, Israeli soldiers almost immediately opened fire on those sheltering inside.
At the Dahmash mosque alone, between 80 and 176 people were killed with guns, grenades and rockets. Outside, it was worse.
😱 One correspondent who witnessed the assault reported "practically everything in their way died," with corpses of men, women and even children strewn along the roadsides.
Total killed: at least 426 people in Lydda alone.
😰 Death march order
July 12. Israeli PM David Ben-Gurion gave the order: "The inhabitants of Lydda must be expelled quickly without attention to age." It was signed by Yitzhak Rabin, then operations chief.
50,000–70,000 Palestinians were forced from their homes. Ramla's residents were trucked out. Lydda's were made to walk—a death march through the summer heat without food or water. The elderly, women and children died along the roadside.
The two ancient towns were swiftly repopulated with Jewish immigrants and given Hebrew names: Lod and Ramla. These events accounted for one-tenth of the entire Palestinian exodus of 1948.
