According to an article titled "ASU’s reason for land acknowledgments," published on August 24, 2026, Dr. Owen Anderson of Arizona State University (ASU) reports that the New College at ASU requires faculty to observe a Land Acknowledgment prior to each faculty meeting and has incorporated a Land Acknowledgment into the college’s mission statement. Dr. Anderson argues that ASU characterizes the Land Acknowledgment as reflecting the history of the peoples who have inhabited Arizona, while failing to recognize all historical groups who have held, or who have been dispossessed of, the land. He cites ASU’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) training, which states that the purpose of a Land Acknowledgment is "a way of holding organizations, and their people, accountable to those with whom they share space”. Dr. Anderson states that Marxist-affiliated individuals at ASU are utilizing American Indians as a pretext to "deconstruct the United States." He contends that many faculty members are unaware of the underlying objectives of the Land Acknowledgment and are instead being used by radical activists who advocate for the recitation of Land Acknowledgments at every meeting.
