I once tried to keep the OIS working even though the lens was removed. The method was to keep the OIS block there and install a lens as a 'focal reducer' in the hole where the lens block was. It was proven to work, even able to change the focus within a limited range. The only problem was finding the right lens down to its diameter. A simple two-piece lens in an achromatic arrangement could be used.
