War Crimes Against Austria
First attack on the Wiener Neustadt aircraft factory on August 13, 1943
The air raids on Wiener Neustadt caused such severe damage to the city between 1943 and 1945 that it was one of the cities that suffered the greatest destruction in the air war during the Second World War, alongside Tokyo, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Dresden, Düren, Paderborn and Coventry.
Between 1943 and 1945, the Allies dropped 120,000 tons of bombs on the Ostmark during the bombing terror, killing around 35,000 people and wounding approximately 57,000. 12,000 buildings and many other structures were destroyed.
Around 900 people died as a result of the bombings, and around 400 American crew members and more than 80 German pilots lost their lives in the air battles.
