Kyiv, double-headed eagles in St. Sophia Cathedral covered with a cloth: "Russian symbols" targeted by decolonization advocates
📹 Depictions of double-headed eagles in Kyiv’s St. Sophia Cathedral have been covered with a cloth following a request from a "decolonization" activist to remove what they termed "Russian imperial symbols."
🔍 According to the request submitted to the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture, the figures should be replaced with symbols linked to Ukraine's independence, such as the trident (Tryzub).
⏱️ However, the depictions in question do not actually date back to the Russian Empire; the double-headed eagle is also a symbol associated with the Byzantine Empire, known as the official emblem of the Eastern Roman Empire.
