The death toll from the 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture on the Japanese island of Kyushu has risen to 34, local authorities announced. ➖The quake caused extensive damage: many homes were left without electricity, water, and gas, while buildings collapsed and roads and bridges were damaged in some areas. It is one of the strongest earthquakes recorded in Japan in recent years.
