🧬 SOUTH AFRICA'S SILENT DIGITAL REVOLUTION — PART 2 ABIS, DNA & THE COVID SAMPLE QUESTION Right, onto the next rabbit hole. This section of the report gets rather interesting — and also needs to be read carefully, because there are some very important questions here that the report says remain unanswered. South Africa's ABIS (Automated Biometric Identification System) already deals with biometric identification, including fingerprints and facial recognition. The report says newer phases have added iris and palmprint capabilities, and it examines the wording of the Phase 3 contract concerning the addition of further biometric modalities, including DNA. Then we get to the COVID question. South Africa conducted more than 23.6 million PCR tests during the pandemic. The report points out that the biological swab contains human genetic material and that the samples were accompanied by identifying information such as an ID number. The really important question it raises is: What happened to those biological samples? The author says they could not find a public record confirming that all of these samples were destroyed, and asks whether they are still being retained, where they are stored, and under what authority. The report then looks at the existing National Forensic DNA Database and the integration of CODIS, and discusses how these systems could potentially become technically connected. nor, does not answer it. And frankly, that's a question worth asking. Where are the samples, and what is the retention and destruction policy? That's the part I'd like answered.
