A 24-year-old Israeli man was arrested at Ercan Airport in northern Cyprus after security officials discovered four human embryos hidden in his luggage. In Jewish law (Halakha), a fetus is legally characterized as "mere water" (Hebrew: maya b'alma, מים בעלמא) during the first 40 days following conception.
Security officers scanned his baggage and uncovered a specialized cryogenic embryo transport container. The container was labeled "Life Parcel" (or "Life Pack") and held four embryos preserved in separate test tubes.
Authorities state that the suspect was attempting to traffic the genetic material out of the country without receiving official permits or regulatory clearance from the local Health Ministry.
