The U.S. State Department issued a worldwide travel caution advising Americans, particularly those in the Middle East, to exercise increased caution because of escalating tensions with Iran and the potential for attacks against U.S. interests, diplomatic facilities, and Americans abroad by Iran-backed groups. The warning also advises travelers to monitor embassy guidance, prepare for possible flight disruptions and airspace closures, and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program for updates. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned of increasing terrorist threats, including assassination attempts against President Trump, and said Iranian proxy networks are increasingly connected to leftist militant groups. President Trump warned Iran that he has instructed the United States to respond with overwhelming force if he is assassinated. The heightened alert follows the collapse of the U.S.-Iran ceasefire, Iranian attacks on international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and U.S. military assets that killed two American service members, and continued U.S. strikes on Iranian military targets and infrastructure.
