President Trump called on Congress to expand the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia Act of 2026 to include sanctions on Iran, stating that adding Iran reflected the wishes of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham. The request came after the State Department issued a worldwide travel caution warning of escalating tensions with Iran and the possibility of attacks on U.S. interests abroad. The United States already maintains extensive sanctions on Iran and recently targeted Iranian financier Ali Ansari and associated exchange houses accused of helping sanctioned Iranian banks move billions of dollars through shell companies. The Senate bill, introduced by Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Darline Graham in honor of Lindsey Graham, seeks to strengthen sanctions on Russia, has more than 60 bipartisan cosponsors, and follows an earlier version that stalled amid concerns about its broad economic impact and the need to preserve presidential flexibility in applying sanctions.
