Troy Jackson secured enough support from Maine Democratic convention delegates to become the party's expected nominee for the U.S. Senate seat after winning commitments from nearly two-thirds of the 601 delegates, although the formal nomination will occur at the state convention. Jackson, a fifth-generation logger backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders who appeared on the "Fighting the Oligarchy" tour, emerged after former Democratic nominee Graham Platner withdrew from the race following rape allegations. The Democratic primary had originally selected Platner despite his Nazi tattoo and past allegations of sexual assault, but party leaders moved to replace him after a former girlfriend accused him of rape. Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows ended her campaign during the delegate selection process, while transgender candidate Ashley Webb also sought the nomination but did not secure sufficient support.
