The line graph compares four different sources—transport, industry, households, and total air pollutants—in terms of their contribution to air pollution in the UK between 1990 and 2005, measured in million tonnes. While the levels of industry and total air pollutants were consistently the highest, the opposite was true for transport and households. In addition, almost all categories experienced a downward trend, with the exception of transport, where the figure remained largely unchanged. Looking first at the highest indicators of air pollution, total air pollutants declined considerably, falling from around 7 million tonnes in 1990 to about 3 million tonnes by the end. Meanwhile, a significant decrease was the case in industry, starting at roughly 5.5 million tonnes and then falling to 2 million tonnes by the end. Turning to the lowest levels of air pollution, transport remained the same throughout the period, standing at approximately 1 million tonnes each year. By contrast, while the level of households was the same as that of transport in 1990, the amount of pollution witnessed a gradual decrease, reaching nearly zero by 2005.
