 Jellyfin Founders Step Down from the Team Jellyfin, the FLOSS alternative to Plex has had a major change to its leadership structure   Summary Jellyfin, a Free/Libre and Open Source Software alternative to the private media hosting software Plex has had a change in its leadership. Siting burnout and loss of motivation, major members of the founding team have decided to step away from the project. The Co-founder has also hinted there have been disagreements about using AI Generated assistent Calude in the development of the software, along with receiving abuse from users when something doesn't work as intended.    Quotes Quote The developer has been working on rewriting Jellyfin’s desktop client since December 2025 due to long-standing problems, such as HDR support and maintenance issues. However, this work was rejected by the broader community. Quote The cofounder also hinted at earlier disagreements over the use of the AI assistant Claude during project development – some members pushed back, another early sign of hostility that wore him down. Boniface, meanwhile, states “severe burnout, and risks to my mental health” as a reason for departure. Quote Boniface assures that the ongoing hand-off is “amicable,” there is little to no risk of “hostile fork or anything of that nature,” and hopes the project will outlive him. “Jellyfin will continue for a long time to come, just not with me at its head.”   My thoughts Having been an avid user of Plex for, I can't even remember how long at this point - I switched over to Jellyfin when I started to experience little issues such as disconnections from local servers. My experience with Jellyfin hasn't been without issues, and I've been toggling back and forth between Jellyfin and going back to Plex, but I just love the fact of the Openness of the Jellyfin Project. Yes, it's not perfect, but that's the beauty of it: being FLOSS people can contribute to the project. The fact that the leadership team is changing is a slight worry for me - will the new team keep the promises of what made Jellyfin such an amazing project, or as the co-founder and previous devs have started to experience - will they start to use AI-generated code, or will they close off the community site of the project and go the way of Plex/Emby (Just my thoughts - not that I want them to). Either way, if the devs are receiving abuse as claimed, that is not okay, and it should never reach that point - so if it's affecting them mentally, I beleive they are making the right choice and support their decision.
