I remember living in Chicago in the early 1990s. Totally white neighbourhoods south-west side. Could leave the doors open, no violence or crookedness of any sort. The family I was staying with had a house on the same street for rent. We were told that if someone rang about the house and sounded like they were black to tell them the house had been rented. I asked naively "how will I know they're black?" "Oh you'll know." The next couple of weeks until the house got rented were a learning experience, believe me.
