🌒 An Eclipse Story… Showing the Difference Between Exploiting People and the Truthfulness of Prophethood Yesterday, people across Europe witnessed a solar eclipse. In the past, events like this could deeply frighten people because they did not understand their causes as clearly as we do today. It is reported that when Christopher Columbus was in Jamaica in 1504, he learned from astronomical tables that a lunar eclipse was going to occur. He took advantage of the fact that the local people did not know this, telling them that God was angry with them and that the Moon would disappear as a sign. When the eclipse actually happened, they became frightened and believed him, and he was able to pressure them into providing food for him and his men. This reminded me of a completely different situation… Ibrāhīm, the son of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, passed away, and on that same day, a solar eclipse occurred. Some people said: The Sun has eclipsed because of Ibrāhīm’s death. Just imagine the situation… If Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had been a false claimant seeking anything that could increase his prestige in people’s eyes, he would not even have needed to lie or invent a story. The people themselves had already connected the eclipse with the death of his son! All he had to do was remain silent. But instead, the Prophet ﷺ went out to the people and immediately corrected this belief, saying: “The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of the death or life of anyone.” He did not exploit people’s lack of knowledge. He did not connect the phenomenon to himself. He did not even accept a false belief that could have increased people’s admiration for him. And here the difference becomes clear: One man knew that an astronomical event was coming and used it for his own benefit, while the Prophet ﷺ witnessed an event that could easily have been used to strengthen his personal status, yet he rejected that interpretation and corrected the false belief. ❤️ From this, we can see a powerful example of his truthfulness and integrity. A person seeking personal glory may exploit such events, but a truthful person speaks the truth even when a false belief could have benefited him.
