Imagine the world is made up of thousands of cities
Every city has its own roads, traffic laws, toll systems, and preferred vehicles
One city only allows electric cars
Another only uses trains
Another only accepts bicycles
Another has old cobblestone streets that only horses can navigate
Now imagine someone says:
“Everyone must abandon their roads and rebuild the entire planet using my highway.”
No mayor agrees
It would cost trillions
It would take decades
Nobody wants to surrender sovereignty
So nothing changes
The Modern-Day Parable: The Universal Shipping Company
Instead of trying to convince every city to tear up its roads, a brilliant engineer builds something entirely different
He creates the world’s first Universal Shipping Company
Its trucks don’t care what roads exist
When a shipment arrives at City A…
it may travel by truck
then transfer to rail
then to ship
then airplane
then motorcycle
then hand delivery
A customer never notices
They simply know
“My package arrived almost instantly.”
A customer doesn’t care what roads were used
Interledger Protocol (ILP)
ILP is that Universal Shipping Company
It doesn’t replace roads,
It connects them
It speaks every financial language
Banks
Blockchains
Central banks
Credit unions
Stablecoins
Traditional ledgers
Private ledgers
Public ledgers
CBDCs
Future technologies that haven’t even been invented yet
ILP simply asks:
“Where does this payment need to go?”
Then finds the most efficient path
XRP Ledger
Now imagine something else
Whenever a shipment reaches a border
there must be a Currency Exchange
Imagine changing dollars
to euros
to yen
to pesos
to pounds
over & over again
That is today’s correspondent banking system
Slow
Expensive
Capital intensive
Now imagine instead
every border has one incredibly liquid universal warehouse
Anything can instantly be exchanged there
Every truck stops there
Every train stops there
Every airplane stops there
Everything can convert instantly
That warehouse
is the XRP Ledger
XRP
Now ask yourself
What sits inside the warehouse?
Liquidity
The inventory
The universal settlement asset
That inventory is XRP
Without inventory,
the warehouse is just an empty building
Without liquidity,
payments stop
Why Ripple Built Both
Ripple understood something nearly everyone else missed
The future would never become:
One blockchain
Instead
it would become:
Millions of networks
Millions of banks
Thousands of blockchains
Thousands of stablecoins
Hundreds of nations
Each wanting independence
Yet all needing interoperability
Ripple solved interoperability
Not uniformity
The Internet Analogy
The Internet did not replace
Apple
Microsoft
Amazon
Google
Netflix
Banks
Universities
Governments
It gave them a common protocol
TCP/IP
Everyone stayed independent
Everyone became connected
ILP does for value what TCP/IP did for information
Where XRP Fits
Think about what happened after TCP/IP
The Internet exploded
Not because everyone became identical,
but because everyone became connected,
The more connected everyone became
the more valuable the network became
The same network effect can apply to value transfer
If ILP connects thousands of payment networks, then settlement demand may increase on whichever assets institutions choose to use for bridging.
Ripple designed XRP to serve as one neutral bridge asset because it can settle quickly, operate independently of any single country’s currency & doesn’t require institutions to maintain pre-funded accounts in every destination currency
That does not mean every ILP transaction must use XRP. ILP is asset-agnostic and can route payments using many different settlement assets depending on the participants’ preferences and available liquidity.
#Ripple built the plumbing
#Interledger is the universal connector
#XRPL is a high-performance settlement network within that ecosystem
#XRP is a bridge asset designed to provide liquidity where it offers true advantage
