Tuesday Insights: The Saylor Pivot ₿ In 2020, Michael Saylor turned a software company's cash reserves into one of the boldest corporate bets of the decade. Six years later, one of its defining principles has changed. 1️⃣ The Bet The story began in 2020, when MicroStrategy was sitting on more than $500 million in cash as near-zero interest rates and massive monetary stimulus reshaped Saylor's view of corporate reserves. He concluded that holding dollars was steadily eroding purchasing power and started searching for an alternative. In August, the company made its first move: $250 million for 21,454 $BTC. What began as a treasury decision soon reshaped the entire company. 2️⃣ The Machine The real scale came from financial engineering. Strategy sold new MSTR shares, issued convertible bonds and later created preferred securities such as STRK, STRF, STRD and STRC, each designed to attract different investors through combinations of yield, seniority and equity exposure. The proceeds flowed into more $BTC, allowing the company to build a $60B+ treasury far beyond what its software business could have financed. Strong demand for its securities kept the cycle running: raise, buy, repeat. 3️⃣ The U-Turn Then the market turned the model on its head. $BTC fell roughly 50% from its 2025 peak, $MSTR dropped more than 45% YTD and Strategy's mNAV slipped below 1 for the first time, making its traditional fundraising engine far less attractive. That's when “never sell” finally cracked. Strategy began using $BTC to fund preferred payouts and rebuild its USD reserve, selling 3,588 coins for $216 million around the turn of July and authorizing up to another $1.25 billion. A principle Saylor defended for years had met its first real financial constraint. 4️⃣ The Feedback Loop Now the stress test extends beyond Strategy itself. The company controls more than 840,000 $BTC, roughly 4% of the maximum supply, giving its decisions potential weight far beyond its own balance sheet. That creates a potentially powerful cycle: weaker $BTC makes financing harder, treasury sales can add pressure or shift sentiment, and further declines tighten the same conditions again. Strategy has become large enough for the asset supporting its model and the company holding it to influence each other. 📌 Key takeaway The next full market cycle could decide whether Saylor built a blueprint for corporate finance or revealed where the $BTC treasury model reaches its limits. ➡️New post on X⬅️ Website | App |  X  | Chat | Channel
