The House has passed a bill banning members of Congress and their spouses from purchasing individual stocks in a 232–198 vote.
The legislation would also apply to dependent children and would require lawmakers to publicly disclose planned stock sales in advance. Members would still be allowed to sell investments they already own, but they would face financial penalties for violating the new restrictions.
The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.
