MARCH Saturday 22nd August 2026, 1pm at Ellesmere Street Park, Higher Green, Astley. M29 7QP.
SAVE OUR GREENBELT ASTLEY & BOOTHSTOWN
Who fancies a good summertime march in defence of our local greenbelt at M29 (Astley) and M28 (Boothstown, Worsley)? The marches at Manchester used to be fantastic back in the days, we'll never forget those times. The last local marches got excellent attendances and whilst we are aware that marches aren't the be and end all of resistance imho they have their place for spreading awareness.
Peel's plans to develop the greenbelt in the village where we live at Higher Green (Astley Green) M29 got put 'on hold' due to pressure from locals through the consultations, marches, meetings, pressure and responses from locals.
Sadly the land to the side of RHS Bridgewater at Boothstown was approved for 'high end' housing which will stretch several fields right up to Boothstown Marina earlier this month. This is a travesty and will devastate local wildlife habitats!

At the same time Peel with Wigan, Manchester and Salford have started to say they want to develop this same area as a leisure destination. Who would want to visit nature free concreted sites?
Please note, this march is from 'Save Our Greenbelt Astley & Boothtown' which is a local group with a presence primarily on Facebook.
It is imho a great strategy to have several independent local groups fighting for the same cause rather than reliance on a particular group or specific individuals. This ensures most people will have a choice of how to resist and with whom. It is important that locals are able to choose the resistance groups and messages they most resonate with.
