(Continued) Interesting timing, isn’t it? Let’s be honest here. This isn’t about whether Jagmeet Singh is a nice guy. This isn’t about whether you agree with his politics. This is about one simple question. What experience does he have that makes him the best person to lead Canada’s tourism industry? Has he run a major tourism board? No. A hotel chain? No. An airline? No. A destination marketing organization? No. A travel company? No. His career has been as a criminal defence lawyer and then as a politician. That’s it. Meanwhile, Canada has thousands of people who have spent decades building our tourism industry. People who have worked in hotels, airlines, resorts, destination marketing, convention centers, provincial tourism organizations, and international travel. People who have actually sold Canada to the world. Those are the people you’d expect to be leading Destination Canada. Instead, the former leader of the party that kept the Liberals in power for years is suddenly being floated for one of the highest-paying tourism jobs in the country. Canadians aren’t stupid. They can connect the dots. The NDP signed the confidence-and-supply agreement. They kept Trudeau’s government alive for three more years. Jagmeet became the public face of that deal. The NDP was then absolutely demolished in the election. Now, before the dust has even settled… A $350,000 government appointment appears on the horizon. Maybe it’s a coincidence. Maybe he’s secretly the world’s greatest tourism executive and none of us knew it. Or maybe this is exactly why Canadians have lost so much faith in our political system. Because it always seems like the insiders land softly. If you’re well connected, there’s always another appointment. Another board. Another commission. Another Crown corporation. Another taxpayer-funded salary. Meanwhile, the person who has spent 30 years building a business in the tourism industry probably doesn’t even get an interview. Think about the message this sends. Imagine working your entire career in Canadian tourism. You’ve survived COVID. You’ve survived travel restrictions. You’ve dealt with labour shortages. You’ve dealt with inflation. You’ve spent decades building relationships around the world to convince people to visit Canada. Then you’re told that the top job might go to someone whose biggest qualification is being a former politician. How motivating would that be? This is the bigger problem with government today. Too many appointments feel like rewards for political loyalty instead of recognition for excellence. The people making the decisions keep telling Canadians they want the “best and brightest.” Then they keep looking in the same political circles. Canada has incredible talent. We have people who have dedicated their entire careers to tourism. If we’re serious about growing our economy, attracting visitors, creating jobs, and competing globally, those are the people who should be leading the charge. Not someone looking for a political soft landing after an election defeat. If this appointment happens, don’t tell Canadians it’s about merit. Tell them what it looks like. Because to millions of Canadians… It looks an awful lot like a thank-you card.
