Visualizing Air Flow & Heat with Schlieren Imaging Schlieren imaging is a technique that makes the invisible visible, revealing the hidden behavior of air and light in real time. Light bends when it passes through regions where air density changes, whether from heat, pressure, or a change in gas composition. Schlieren imaging exploits this bending. A bright point source of light is aimed at a large concave mirror, which reflects it back precisely toward a razor blade placed at the focal point. When air disturbances push the reflected beam even slightly off course, some light that would have cleared the blade gets blocked, while other light that would have been blocked sneaks past. That shift registers on a camera as brightness and shadow, translating invisible density gradients into a visible, high-contrast image. The word itself comes from the German word for "streak," and the optical phenomenon was first noticed in 1665. A full Schlieren setup requires a large parabolic or spherical mirror, a point-like light source, a blade positioned exactly at the mirror's focal point, and a camera aimed back at the mirror. Lower-cost versions replace the glass mirror with flat Fresnel lenses made from cheap acrylic sheeting, bringing the whole apparatus within reach of amateur builders for tens of dollars rather than thousands . The critical constraint is that the light source must behave like a single point, so builders cover a bright LED with a pinhole made from foil and a needle, concentrating the output into a tight enough spot for the optics to work . At everyday scales, Schlieren imaging shows heat rising silently from a human hand, cold air falling from a chilled drink can, invisible gas leaking from an unlit lighter, and breath dispersing across a room. At ballistic scales, a high-speed camera captures the full conical shock wave attached to a supersonic bullet in flight, the gas eruption from a muzzle, shock waves leaking sideways from the gap between a revolver's cylinder and barrel, and pressure waves reflecting off floors and walls after a shot. Each of these phenomena exists continuously in the physical world yet remains entirely hidden to the eye without the Schlieren apparatus to convert density into light and shadow.
