“A Total Disaster”
That’s how Bild columnist Jasper Bitter described the fuel and energy policy of Friedrich Merz’s government, noting that Germany is facing a shortage of gasoline and diesel and their constantly rising prices, while the authorities are not taking any effective measures, merely pretending to be busy and “profiting from every expensive liter.”
The Federal Cartel Office came under particularly heavy criticism: according to Bitter, it merely “investigates, forms working groups, and requests data,” but does not take “significant measures” against refineries and fuel companies that are artificially inflating prices, nor does it provide tax and other incentives to conscientious market participants.
