Maybe the registry key is protected or something?
Some AV solutions may keep the registry key blocked even after disabling them

commits to repo don't affect releases anyway, technically nothing stopping people from getting a fixed upstream rdpw by compiling

Committing to the repo would mean that I'm back to maintaining the project, at least from my own perception
i understand your perception but just do a one final maintenance move before retiring the project completely by indicating it's archived
