Most blockchains have a storage problem they don't talk about enough.
Smart contracts keep creating data.
And if nothing happens to that data, the blockchain keeps carrying it forever.
Stellar $XLM took a different approach with Soroban. 🧠
Contract data has a time-to-live.
Want your data to remain live onchain? You pay rent for the storage and extend its TTL.
Let it expire, and the network doesn't keep treating it as active state forever.
Instead:
• Temporary data is deleted
• Persistent data can be archived and restored
• Instance data can be archived and restored
• Storage costs scale with the size and lifetime of the data
Why does this matter?
Because unlimited state growth eventually becomes a scaling problem.
More state means more storage, more resources for validators, and a higher hardware burden for anyone trying to operate the network.
Soroban's model puts a price on that state instead of pretending storage is infinite.
And Protocol 23 made the system even smoother: archived contract data can now be restored automatically when an operation needs it.
That may sound like a small technical detail.
It isn't.
It's part of the infrastructure philosophy behind Stellar $XLM :
don't optimize only for what the network can do today. Optimize for what happens when millions of financial records are living on it. ⚙️
