The first scientifically described dinosaur was Megalosaurus, named by the British geologist William Buckland in 1824 from fossil fragments found in the Stonehenge (Middle Jurassic) Stonesfield Slate of Oxfordshire, England. Earlier, in the 1770s, large bone pieces were uncovered at the same Stonesfield site, but they were only noted as “big bones” and never classified; they therefore have little scientific relevance. A couple of years later, in 1822, Gideon Mantell described Iguanodon teeth from Sussex, marking the first recognized herbivorous dinosaur, but Buckland’s Megalosaurus remains the earliest formal dinosaur description.
