The MOVE bombing in Philadelphia (1985): On May 13, 1985, the Philadelphia Police Department, with the approval of the city administration, clashed with the radical group MOVE (a predominantly Black countercultural organization). During the siege, a police helicopter dropped an explosive device (a mixture of commercial dynamite and C-4 explosive) onto the roof of the house where group members were barricaded. The explosion caused a massive fire that the police allowed to spread. The blaze destroyed 61 neighboring homes, left hundreds homeless, and killed 11 people, including 5 children.
