Exactly. Also it's different from "ones who volunteer serving the evil overlord in its imperial ambitions". For Americans in particular this seems to be hard to get their head around, because the US hasn't fought a defensive, let alone existential, war for several centuries (the closest thing to it was probably the 1812).
