It’s slang we use as the descendents of both groups that settled Appalachia and the frontier country. They became a unique part of the tapestry on early America.
Technically it would be the Scotts Irish but we are a simple folk

My Great Uncle was a chemistry professor at Duke University. He maintained a still in his basement and made his own white lightening and fortified wines from Scuppernong and Muscadine grapes that he grew in his garden. He was the biggest supporter of Jesse Helms that I ever knew. He put huge signs all over his Cadillac and had announcer speakers on the roof that were connected to a PA system and would travel around extolling the virtues of Jesse Helms and urging folks to get out and vote for Helms and Dixie!
