Something is taking out the world’s oil refining capacity, one refinery at a time, and I find it increasingly difficult to believe that the pattern is merely coincidental. Ukraine is attacking the Russian refineries that produce diesel and gasoline. Yemen’s strikes have targeted Saudi energy infrastructure, including refineries, pipelines and the vital East West corridor. Nord Stream was destroyed, while Western Europe was persuaded to dismantle its own energy security in the name of a climate narrative that was never remotely credible. Refineries across the United States have also closed, removing hundreds of thousands of barrels a day of processing capacity, and now Joliet, outside Chicago, is offline, taking millions of gallons of daily Midwest fuel production with it. Meanwhile, Iran and Israel are striking one another’s energy infrastructure, while Trump threatens further attacks on Iran, potentially restarting another round of destruction. Different countries, different wars, different explanations, yet the same critical infrastructure keeps being hit: refineries. And that is the part we should be paying attention to because crude oil is useless to ordinary people until it is refined. Without sufficient refining capacity there is no affordable diesel, and without affordable diesel there are no tractors working the fields, no reliable harvests, no trucks transporting food and no fertilizer reaching the farmers who need it. In countries where farmers are already struggling to survive, many will simply be unable to continue. This is not merely the possibility of an energy crisis; it is the architecture of a global food crisis.
