"Historically, flower painting was dismissed by male critics as a decorative, female craft lacking intellectual depth. In my latest work, I confront this legacy through contemporary reinterpretations of 18th-century floral still-life painter Anne Vallayer-Coster. Rather than idolising traditional femininity, I look to dissect, subvert, and poke fun at the rigid social structures that historically restricted female artists to this genre. By titling the work Floral Arrangement, I directly challenge the 19th-century bourgeois assumption that women are suited only for order and decoration, rather than invention and creation.

To uncover these clichés, I combine classical floral imagery with seductive materials drawn from fashion - such as fake fur, lace and animal prints. While fashion design uses eroticised dress to experiment with female empowerment, it simultaneously reinforces a new anxiety centred on restrictive body sizes. By mixing these textures with traditional paintings, I challenge historical and modern stereotypes, transforming them into a visual statement of strength that questions the objectification of femininity and female sexuality." - Anne von Freyburg

Kim’s tactile paper compositions blur the line between sculpture and painting, thousands of hand-rolled paper seeds building surfaces that shift with every viewing distance. Upcoming: Li Jie, 'Emotional Residue’ 🌈 20 October - 03 November For his second solo exhibition at HOFA, titled 'Emotional Residue, Li Jie presents a body of recent works. He asks how time leaves its mark on us, how memory takes shape in relation to space, and how emotion moves through what we see. In Li Jie's paintings, recurring groups of people are captured in moments of togetherness. In some works, the depicted crowds are composed of people moving in similar ways who happen to be together by chance, brought together by a place or an event. In other works, human figures momentarily lose themselves in the celebrations around them: the scale of the crowd throws the smallness of the individual into relief, while the collective experience of shared presence brings a sense of release and dissolution.
