India is in talks with China to route westbound flights via Hotan in Xinjiang, bypassing Pakistan’s shut airspace.
Proposed Route: Indian flights would transit via Hotan into Central Asian airspace toward Europe and the West.
Operational Impact: The current detour via Muscat and the Arabian Sea adds 45 minutes to 2 hours of flight time, driving up fuel burn and operating costs.
Diplomatic Context: Follows easing bilateral ties post-BRICS summit and the resumption of direct India-China air connectivity.
