The Topsy Turvy World of Cherry Picking Verses and Twisting Them One way the proponents of the heresy known as Universal Forgiveness interpret Colossians 2:13–15 is by treating the passage, particularly the relationship between “having forgiven you all trespasses” and “blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us” – as a universal timeline that automatically applies to every person. Yet Scripture teaches that the law (the handwriting of ordinances) still serves to reveal Man’s sinful condition in this present dispensation. Romans 7:7 KJB “What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.” 1 Corinthians 15:56 KJB “The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.” Romans 3:20 KJB “Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.” Unsaved men are identified and condemned by the law as sinners.  Therefore, it is only when a sinner receives the provision Christ made for his/her sin (1 Corinthians 15:1-4) by faith, that the blessings (salvation) of Colossians 2 become true of that individual as follows: *The handwriting of ordinances: Blotted out. *Trespasses: Forgiven. *Spiritual condition/position changed: From being dead in sins and trespasses to being quickened together with Christ. *Principalities and powers (Satan and his minions): Spoiled through Christ’s provision for mankind’s sins. So the handwriting of ordinances that testified against the believer when he/she was a sinner are removed.
