Protecting Your Genetic Information
Your DNA is among the most permanent personal data you will ever produce. Unlike a password, an email address, or a payment card, it cannot be changed if it is copied, sold, leaked, or reused. A single consumer test creates a detailed record of you and, by extension, of parents, siblings, and children who never agreed to be tested.
These services are often marketed as harmless curiosity: ethnicity estimates, wellness traits, distant cousins. In practice they involve a biological sample, a stored raw file, internal research programmes, possible commercial partnerships, and retention policies that survive account closures, acquisitions, and bankruptcy. Treat that as a privacy decision, not a novelty purchase.
Before you test Ask, in writing if needed, who holds the sample, how long it is kept, whether raw data may be used in research, whether it can be transferred if the company is sold, and what “delete” actually removes. If the answers are vague, do not send the kit.
If you have already tested You cannot make the data fully disappear, but you can reduce what remains in circulation:
1. Download your raw data and keep it offline, not in a shared cloud folder.
2. Withdraw consent for research, product development, and any optional sharing.
3. Request destruction of the physical saliva or blood sample.
4. Permanently delete the genetic profile and, if appropriate, the whole account. Confirm the email they send.
5. Remove any files you uploaded to third-party matching or interpretation sites.
Understand the limits A relative’s test can still sketch a large part of your genome. Firms often retain limited records for legal and audit purposes. Information already used in completed studies is rarely withdrawn. Lawful demands can override consumer privacy settings. Deletion is damage control, not invisibility.
A practical standard Do not submit DNA unless there is a clear medical, legal, or personal need you have weighed against the permane
