The term 'crown' in this context is the Greek word stephanos, which refers to a crown awarded to a victor or as a reward, not the crown of a king (diadēma); it is a reward given to people who remain firm in their faith and continue to love Christ even though they are facing trials and temptations. This fits well with the teaching on the Bema Seat: In Romans 14:10–12 it is stated: "For all of us will have to stand before the judgment seat of Christ." 2 Corinthians 5:10 says, "For all of us will have to appear before the judgment seat of Christ in order that each person may receive the things done in his body..." The works which we carry out will be tried by fire; some will receive a reward, some will suffer a loss, "but he himself will be saved". The New Testament mentions several crowns associated with faithful Christian living: The Crown of Life is awarded for enduring trials and still remaining faithful (James 1:12; Revelation 2:10). The Crown of Rejoicing is often regarded as the crown received by the itinerant preacher (1 Thessalonians 2:19). After believers receive these rewards, Revelation gives a beautiful picture of what happens next: The four and twenty elders fall down before him and lay their crowns at the throne, saying, 'You are worthy, O Lord, to be given glory and honour and power...' (Revelation 4:10–11).
