🤖 OpenAI started with 11 founders. Only 3 are still inside the company today.
The recent OpenAI trial pulled the spotlight back onto the company’s origins and what happened to the people who built it.
Today, only Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and Wojciech Zaremba remain at OpenAI.
• Wojciech Zaremba stayed through every phase of the company’s evolution. After years leading robotics research, he now focuses on AI safety and long-term alignment.
• Elon Musk left OpenAI’s board in 2018 after clashing over the company’s direction. He later launched xAI and folded it into SpaceX.
• Ilya Sutskever departed in 2024 after helping build OpenAI’s research powerhouse. He went on to co-found Safe Superintelligence, a lab dedicated entirely to safe AGI.
• Andrej Karpathy left to lead Tesla’s Autopilot efforts, briefly returned to OpenAI, launched education startup Eureka Labs, and has now joined Anthropic.
• Durk Kingma, a key figure in modern deep learning, moved from OpenAI to Google DeepMind before later joining Anthropic.
• John Schulman, one of the architects behind ChatGPT’s reinforcement learning systems, left in 2024 and is now chief scientist at Mira Murati’s Thinking Machines.
•Pamela Vagata was the first founder to exit. She later joined Stripe’s AI initiatives before launching venture firm Pebblebed.
• Trevor Blackwell stepped away from OpenAI in 2017 and eventually became a partner at Y Combinator after a long career in robotics and startups.
• Vicki Cheung helped build OpenAI’s infrastructure before leaving to co-found Gantry, a company focused on improving machine learning operations.
Nearly every OpenAI founder went on to build, fund, or lead another major AI company.
The original team didn’t just create OpenAI, they seeded an entire AI ecosystem.
