Researchers found that nearly half the time, these services secretly swap in weaker models like Haiku, GLM, Kimi, or Gemini Flash while pretending it’s Claude Opus. Performance reportedly drops hard, but most users never notice. The setup is wild: • $5 VPS servers running open-source Claude proxies • Thousands of fake accounts managed through anti-detect browsers • AI-generated passports for KYC verification • Real-time deepfake face swaps to pass identity checks • Massive resale farms with margins above 80% But the craziest part isn’t the fake tokens, it’s the data harvesting. Every single prompt sent through these proxy services can be logged: • Your chats • Your code • Your documents • Your tool calls • Even reasoning traces Basically, users think they’re buying discounted AI access… …but they’re actually donating training data to random operators running black-market AI farms.
