A research team from Westlake University in China has introduced a handheld cancer detector, as reported in Nature Photonics. The device is designed to identify early-stage lung cancer using a single drop of blood, and its reported accuracy is 94.9% based on 171 patient samples.
This detector is described as 10,000 times more sensitive than current standard laboratory tests. The technology replaces large laboratory machines with a compact system centered around an LED, a photodetector, and a 3D metamaterial chip. The estimated manufacturing cost per chip is $5.
While the results are notable, it is important to recognize that similar "revolutionary" cancer detection papers appear annually, but few reach widespread clinical adoption. The current data represents an early stage; large-scale clinical validation remains necessary.
