🚀 Elon Musk says the future of AI won’t be built on Earth.
And he thinks that shift starts in less than three years. Musk: “In 36 months, but probably closer to 30 months, the most economically compelling place to put AI will be space.” That’s not science fiction anymore. It’s an energy argument. AI companies are already running into the same wall: power.
Massive GPU clusters are draining electrical grids, forcing governments and utilities to rethink energy infrastructure just to keep data centers online. And AI models are only getting larger. Musk believes Earth simply can’t scale fast enough. “The only place you can really scale is space.”
Why? Because the Sun produces 3.8 × 10²⁶ watts of energy, while Earth captures only a tiny fraction of it. In Musk’s view, every unused photon in space is wasted compute power. Most companies see AI as a software race.
Musk sees it as a physics race. Finite land. Finite cooling. Finite electricity. Space removes those limits. No overloaded grids. No atmospheric heat traps. Just near-unlimited solar energy waiting to be harvested.
And Musk is uniquely positioned for that future. He owns both the AI company and the rocket company needed to make it happen. Which makes SpaceX look less like a Mars project and more like infrastructure for space-based intelligence. While the rest of the industry fights over Earth’s remaining watts, Musk is preparing to move compute beyond the planet entirely.
The boldest part isn’t the technology, it’s the assumption behind it: Maybe Earth was never meant to be the permanent home of intelligence.
