ALERT: Exotic African Ticks Being Bred Inside U.S. Labs
U.S. government–funded laboratories are actively breeding colonies of Hyalomma ticks imported from Africa to study Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) — a virus with up to a 30% fatality rate that has never existed in America.
Research sites include:
• USDA Agricultural Research Service – Manhattan, KS
• UC Davis – California
• Texas Tech University – Lubbock
These tick colonies are being used to test transmission in cattle, goats, and sheep, and to evaluate whether CCHF could establish itself in the U.S. climate and food system.
This work is also tied to the development of mRNA-based countermeasures, raising serious biosafety concerns if containment ever fails.
