Patch from latest v8 engine version 6.8.12 to latest. Take a snapshot first.
tar xzf pnetlab-upgrade-6.8.12-to-6.8.26.tgz
cd pnetlab-upgrade-6.8.12-to-6.8.26
sudo ./upgrade.sh # full: debs + new node images
sudo ./upgrade.sh --no-nodes # core only (~163 MB), skips the AAA/Browser/Wireshark node images

Now I see the issue clearly. The auto-disk detection in /opt/ovf/ovfstartup.sh (lines 66-92) only works with LVM:

pvs | grep -q $disk # checks if disk is in LVM
pvcreate /dev/$disk # adds to LVM
vgextend $VGS /dev/$disk # extends volume group
lvextend -l +100%FREE ... # extends root LV
resize2fs $ROOTLV # resizes filesystem
Since your root /dev/sda2 is a plain ext4 partition (not LVM), this entire block silently skips the disk. The script finds /dev/sdb, runs pvs | grep -q sdb which fails (sdb isn't an LVM PV), then falls into the if [ $? != 0 ] branch — but then pvcreate, vgs, vgextend, lvextend all fail because there's no VG to extend.
