This is a living tradition rather than a practical necessity. The lamplighter (currently Robert Molendo, who has held the role for many years) wears a distinctive outfit—a black cape with the city’s coat of arms and a top hat—and uses a long pole to open the gas valves and light the lamps at dusk, then extinguishes them before dawn. The practice dates back to the mid-19th century introduction of gas lighting in the city (first lamps around 1846–1847). While most of Wrocław’s gas lamps were replaced by electricity in the mid-20th century, those on Ostrów Tumski were preserved and restored, and the manual lighting continues as a cultural and tourist tradition. It is widely described as one of the last such regular, daily manual operations in Europe (alongside Zagreb in Croatia and Brest in Belarus). Visitors often try to spot the lamplighter around sunset on Cathedral Island. Poland has other working historic gas lamps (for example, clusters in Warsaw’s Sadyba, Bielany, and Agrykola Street areas—hundreds in total across the city—plus smaller numbers in Kraków, Poznań, and a few other spots), but these are generally automatic or not lit by a traditional street lamplighter in the same ceremonial way. Poznań has a monument to a lamplighter next to a restored gas lamp, but the lamp itself is automated.
