However, high-grade ore reserves are depleting, and over the next 20 years, production volumes will increase by 30%, while ore value will decline by 35%. How can product quality be maintained? The authors of the article proposed an integrated approach: they updated ore quality management methods for underground mining, classifying them into blending and stabilization methods and segregation and separation methods. Production studies confirmed the existence of significant reserves for effective ore flow management. What does this offer for practice? A technological scheme for an underground quality management system has been developed, including an information and control structure with real-time monitoring of metal content at all stages — from the face to the surface. 🔥 We present one of the articles from the new issue of the journal "Mining Science and Technology" (No. 2, 2026)! At many mines, substantial mineral reserves remain underground after primary extraction – in pillars, caved zones, or uneconomic areas. Re-mining makes it possible to recover these reserves, but requires confirmation of safety under the conditions of an already formed natural-technogenic rock mass. The authors of the article conducted pilot tests at the BKPRU-2 mine of PJSC Uralkali (Verkhnekamsk deposit). The testwork revealed that caved rocks are prone to inrush, and the strength properties of the layer vary widely: from 0.4–3.8 MPa in caved zones to 16.2–24.0 MPa in pillars. The displacement rates of the working contours in the natural-technogenic layer are 22–28 mm/year, which falls within the standard range. The main conclusion: the re-mining method has confirmed its feasibility and safety. Its implementation will increase the sylvinite ore recovery factor by an average of 16%, extend the service life of operating mines, and bring previously written-off reserves into production – without the need for new mine construction. Spontaneous combustion fires in coal seams are among the most hazardous accidents in underground mining. Timely detection of a fire source and determination of its coordinates are key safety tasks. Acoustic diagnostic methods can supplement existing approaches, but their capabilities have not yet been systematically described. The authors of the article classified acoustic methods for detecting and locating fire sources. Based on the origin of the recorded signal, they are divided into three categories: passive (recording emission from combustion processes), active (probing the rock mass), and combined. For each method, applicability limits, strengths, and weaknesses were identified. A comparative analysis is presented in tabular form using ten criteria. What does this offer for practice? Acoustic diagnostics can detect combustion, determine fire source coordinates, track the spatial and temporal evolution of fire boundaries, and identify the fire stage. The choice of a specific method, or a combination of methods, depends on the operating conditions. A promising direction is the use of highly directional sensing elements in an undisturbed coal pillar for single-station bearing of fire sources.
